DIVERSITY AWARENESS

This one day workshop offers an introduction to diversity, engaging staff on what may be a new and challenging area. The workshop will provide delegates with a definition of what diversity means, the broad range of issues that it covers and how it relates to 'equal opportunities'. Delegates will begin to develop an understanding of relevant employment legislation relating to equality and diversity. Harassment and grievance will also be explored, as well as how language can unintentionally cause offence. The workshop will look at live workplace simulations, set in an office environment, presenting issues around ethnicity, disability, sexuality, gender, ageism and bullying. The workshop aims to give delegates greater confidence and awareness of diversity at work.

What is the Aim of the workshop?

The workshop will enable participants to:

  • Have a shared understanding of diversity issues
  • Understand the relevance and importance of diversity within organisations
  • Identify the barriers to valuing diversity, effective team working, policy making and service delivery
  • Identify actions to integrate diversity practice into their role and function

Who should participate?

This one day workshop is for all levels of staff from all organisations and would be particularly beneficial to those who have received little or no previous training on diversity issues. Those who feel they already have an understanding of diversity will find that this course provides a more comprehensive, detailed outlook.

What does the package include?

  • One workshop for up to 20 participants, including workbooks for delegates to use in the workshop and then keep for future reference
  • One Astar facilitator and a team of professional actors (or use of Astar's Diversity Awareness video, if applicable) - this workshop uses Astar's Theatre for Learning
  • A one hour phone consultation before the workshop to ensure outcomes and context are relevant
  • An evaluation summary of learning outcomes and action points and the opportunity to discuss this with an Astar Consultant

What do we need to provide?

Astar asks that the client provide the following:

  • The workshop venue: 1 main conference room (of suitable capacity) and 1 syndicate room (if possible) with appropriate equipment (chairs, flipcharts, etc.)
  • Lunch and refreshments for the participants, facilitator and acting team
  • If your organisation has any policies relating to diversity that you would like included in the workshop material, these must be supplied 15 working days prior to the workshop
  • Astar will need to be notified of all final details (delegate numbers, venue address, etc.) 10 working days prior to the workshop
